What Full Stump Removal Covers

Removal goes deeper than grinding, so we plan around what is under the ground.

  • A quote at the stump on the day you call
  • Ontario One Call locates requested the day you book
  • The stump and its main root mass dug and cut out
  • Large surface roots traced and removed
  • The hole backfilled with soil and levelled
  • Stump, roots and loose debris hauled away the same day

What Delays a Stump Job, and How We Skip It

The slow part of stump removal is usually the paperwork, not the digging.

  • Waiting on locates before anyone can dig

We request them through Ontario One Call the day you book.

  • Pipes or cables close to the stump

Marked lines get hand-dug around, so the main dig keeps moving.

  • Not sure you need full removal

If you just want lawn back, grinding is faster and cheaper. We tell you which fits.

  • A crater left in the yard

We backfill and level the hole before we go.

Tree Service Master removes stumps across Vaughan, digging out the stump and its main roots so the ground is ready for a patio, a shed pad, a garden bed or a new tree. Call or text (289) 444-0864 and we quote the same day. Once you book, we request utility locates right away, and most single stumps come out in two to four hours.

When Full Removal Is the Right Call

If you only want the stump gone from sight, stump grinding is faster and costs less. Full removal is worth the extra when:

  • You plan to build. A patio, a deck footing, interlock or a shed pad needs firm ground. Roots rotting under it leave hollows, and the surface sinks within a few years.
  • You want a new tree in the same spot. Young roots struggle through a mass of old wood.
  • The stump keeps sprouting. Manitoba maple, poplar, willow and some lilacs push up suckers from the roots for years after the tree comes down.
  • Roots are lifting something. Big surface roots under a walkway or driveway need to come out, not just the stump.

Locates First: Ontario One Call

Full stump removal is digging, and in Ontario anyone digging has to have buried lines located first. We request locates through Ontario One Call the same day you book. The service is free. Locators come out and mark gas, hydro, cable, phone and water lines with paint and flags, and we don’t dig until every marked line is clear.

This is the one step that can add a few days, which is why we start it the day you say yes. If we are also removing the tree, we request locates when you book the removal, so the stump can come out on the same visit.

Locates don’t cover private lines you installed yourself, such as sprinkler pipes, landscape lighting, a gas line to a barbecue or a buried dog fence. Point those out on the quote visit.

How We Remove a Stump

We start by digging around the stump to expose the root flare and the main roots running out from it. Near marked lines we dig by hand. The main roots get cut with saws and an axe, a little way out from the stump. On big stumps we grind the top of the stump down first to make the root mass lighter and easier to lift.

Then we lever and lift the stump and root ball out of the ground. Large surface roots get traced across the lawn and cut out. We backfill the hole with soil, tamp it in layers so it doesn’t sink, and level it with the surrounding grade. The stump, the roots and the loose debris leave with us the same day.

What Makes a Stump Harder to Remove

  • Diameter. A wider stump has a bigger, heavier root mass.
  • Species. Oaks and maples root deep and wide. Spruce and cedar root shallow and spread out.
  • Soil. Vaughan’s heavy clay grips roots tight when dry and turns to paste when wet. Late spring and early fall are often the easiest digging.
  • Access. A fenced backyard in Pine Valley behind a narrow gate takes more work than a front yard stump beside the driveway.
  • What is nearby. Foundations, fence posts, retaining walls and marked lines all slow the dig.
  • Age. A stump from a tree cut five years ago is often easier, because the outer roots have started to rot.

What It Costs

The table on this page shows typical ranges. Full removal of a mid-sized residential stump usually lands in the middle of the range. A large old maple stump beside a foundation sits at the top end. Several small stumps on one visit cost less each, because the locates, the travel and the setup cover them all.

Stumps Beside Foundations, Fences and Walls

Stumps close to a house, a fence post or a retaining wall need a slower approach. Roots often wrap around footings and posts, and pulling them hard can shift whatever they hold. We cut those roots free by hand before lifting the stump. If a root runs under a foundation, we cut it at the wall instead of dragging it out.

Sometimes full removal right beside a structure would do more harm than good. In that case we grind the stump as deep as is safe instead, and explain why before we start.

Removing the Stump With the Tree

The fastest way to clear a spot is to take the tree and the stump on the same visit. We cut the tree with the stump in mind, leaving enough trunk to lever against, and price both together on one quote. If you are still deciding, our guide on grinding versus full removal lays out the trade-offs.

Stumps and Permits

Removing a stump needs no City permit, since the tree is already gone. If the tree is still standing and its trunk is 20 cm or wider at 1.37 m above the ground, removing it needs a permit under Vaughan’s Tree Protection By-law 177-2025 before we cut. Stumps from boulevard trees belong to the City. Call Public Works at 905-832-8585 about those.

Replanting in the Same Spot

Full removal gives a new tree the best start. Fill the hole with good topsoil, let it settle for a few weeks and top it up before planting. Choose a different species from the one you removed, especially if the old tree died of a pest such as emerald ash borer. Plant the new tree with its root flare at ground level, not buried.

Equipment We Bring

A full stump removal is mostly hand tools and a small machine. We bring spades and a trenching shovel, root saws and an axe for cutting roots, long pry bars for levering, and a compact stump grinder to take the top off large stumps. For big root balls on open lots we bring a small machine to lift them. Everything fits through a standard backyard gate, so a fenced yard doesn’t stop the job.

What the Yard Looks Like Afterward

When we leave, the hole is filled, tamped and level with the lawn around it. You will see bare soil where the stump stood and some scuffed grass where we worked. If you plan to seed, tell us and we finish the top few centimetres with screened soil. Expect the fill to settle a little after the first heavy rain. A wheelbarrow of topsoil then brings it level again, and grass seed or sod can go down the same week.

Suckers After the Stump Comes Out

On species that sucker, such as Manitoba maple, poplar and willow, a few shoots can still pop up from roots we left far out in the lawn. Mow or clip them as they appear and they give up within a season or two, because the root has no stump left to feed it. If shoots keep coming from one spot, call us and we dig out that root.

Old Ash Stumps

Emerald ash borer killed most of the untreated ash trees in Vaughan, and many were cut down and left as stumps. Ash stumps don’t sucker much, so grinding is usually enough for lawn. If you want to plant or build where an ash stood, full removal clears the old root plate. Dead ash roots are often brittle, which makes removal quicker than on a living tree.

Commercial and Multi-Stump Jobs

We clear stumps for builders, landlords and plaza owners too. A row of dead ash stumps along a parking lot, or a cluster of stumps on an infill lot in Maple or Concord, goes faster as one booking with one set of locates.

Before We Arrive

  • Leave the locate paint and flags in place until we finish.
  • Tell us about sprinkler lines, lighting cable or a septic system near the stump.
  • Clear planters and furniture from around the stump.
  • Unlock the gate. You don’t need to be home.

Stump Removal Questions

How is stump removal different from stump grinding?

Grinding shreds the stump below the soil and leaves the roots to rot. Removal takes the stump and its main roots out of the ground. Removal costs more but leaves firm ground for building or replanting.

Why do you need locates before removing a stump?

Full removal means digging, and gas, hydro, cable and water lines often run near mature trees. Ontario One Call arranges free locates so every buried line is marked before we dig.

How long does stump removal take?

Two to four hours for most single residential stumps. Large stumps, tight access and big root systems take longer.

Can you remove a stump from a tree someone else cut down?

Yes. Old stumps are often easier, since the outer roots have started to rot.

Do I need a permit to remove a stump?

No. The tree is already gone. A standing tree 20 cm or wider at 1.37 m needs a Vaughan permit before it comes down, and boulevard stumps belong to the City.

Can you remove the stump the same day as the tree?

Yes, if the locates are done before removal day. Book both together and we request the locates right away.
