Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which Do You Need?
Grinding takes the stump 15 to 30 cm below grade in under an hour for most stumps. Removal lifts out the root ball. Pick by what goes in that spot next.
Pick stump grinding if the spot is going back to lawn or a garden bed. Pick full stump removal if a patio, footing, shed slab or new tree goes in that exact place. Grinding cuts the stump 15 to 30 cm below grade and leaves deeper roots to rot. Removal digs out the stump and its main root ball.
Stump Grinding in Numbers
- Depth: 15 to 30 cm below the soil line.
- Time: under an hour for most residential stumps up to about 60 cm across.
- Typical price: $150 to $500 per stump; each extra stump on the same visit costs less.
- Leftover: a hole full of chips, ready to rake flat or swap for soil.
A grinder is a spinning wheel with carbide teeth. The operator sweeps it side to side across the stump and works down until the wood is below grade, then follows the thick surface roots out a short way. Our grinder fits most side gates, so a stump in a fenced Maple or Patterson backyard is a normal job.
Full Stump Removal in Numbers
- Depth: the stump plus the main root ball.
- Time: a few hours per stump, longer for big maples.
- Typical price: $400 to $1,500 per stump.
- Leftover: a wide hole, backfilled with soil.
- Before digging: a free Ontario One Call locate for gas, hydro and water lines.
We dig around the stump, cut the anchor roots and lever or pull the stump free. It disturbs more lawn and costs more, and it is the only option that leaves nothing to rot under new concrete or a deck footing.
Why Clay Matters in Vaughan
Much of Vaughan sits on heavy clay. Roots left behind after grinding rot slower in wet clay than in sandy soil, so the ground over a big ground-out stump can sink 2 to 5 cm over a few years. A bag of topsoil fixes it on a lawn. Under a slab it causes cracks, and that is the main reason to pay for full removal.
Maple Roots Across the Lawn
Norway and silver maples on older Thornhill and Woodbridge lots send thick roots out across the grass. Grinding can chase the biggest ones a metre or so from the stump and take them below the mower line.
Several Stumps at Once
Setup and travel happen once, so four stumps on one visit cost less each than four separate trips. Add old stumps from a previous owner to the same quote.
Sprouting
Manitoba maple, poplar and willow stumps are the most likely to send up shoots. Grinding below grade stops most of it. Our guide on whether a stump will grow back lists what to watch for.
Which One Fits Your Plans
- Lawn or sod over the spot: grinding.
- Flower bed or shrubs: grinding, with the chips swapped for soil.
- New tree in the same hole: full removal.
- Patio, interlock or a shed slab: full removal.
- Deck or fence footings: full removal under each footing, grinding elsewhere.
- Stump hidden at the back of the lot: grinding, or leave it to rot.
Getting the Yard Ready
Move the car out of the driveway so the grinder can roll straight to the gate. Unlock the gate and keep pets inside. Pull planters, hoses and toys back from the stump by 3 m, because the wheel throws chips. If you know where an irrigation line or a buried hydro feed to a shed runs, mark it with a flag or tell us on the call. For full removal, we book the free Ontario One Call locate before anyone digs.
Doing It on Removal Day
If the tree is still standing, book the stump with the removal. The grinder rides on the same truck, so the tree comes down, the stump goes below grade and the yard gets raked in one visit. You skip a second booking and a second set of tire marks across the lawn.
Getting Both Prices
Text us the number of stumps and their rough width across the top, with a photo if you can. We come out on the day you call and price grinding and full stump removal side by side.

Stump Questions
Can you grind the stump on the same visit as the removal?
Yes. The grinder comes on the same truck, so the stump is gone the day the tree comes down, with no second booking.
Can a new tree go in the same hole?
Not after grinding, because the old roots stay in the ground. Plant 1 to 2 m to the side, or choose full removal for that exact spot.
What happens to the chips?
Your call. We leave them to fill the hole, or haul them and fill with soil ready for seed.
