We rake them into the hole or haul them away, your choice.
Stump grinding shreds a tree stump into chips 15 to 30 cm below the surface, so you can seed or lay sod right over the spot. Tree Service Master grinds stumps across Vaughan, from front yards in Woodbridge to fenced backyards in Vellore Village. We quote the same day you call (289) 444-0864, and most single stumps take less than an hour to grind.
How Stump Grinding Works
A stump grinder has a heavy cutting wheel fitted with carbide teeth. We lower the spinning wheel onto the stump and sweep it side to side, taking off a few centimetres with each pass, until the stump sits below the soil. Then we follow the big surface roots that run across the lawn and grind those down too.
The stump turns into a mound of chips and soil. We rake the chips into the hole, or haul them away and fill the hole with soil if you plan to seed right away. Then we level the area and sweep any chips off the driveway and walk.
How Fast a Grinding Job Goes
Grinding is one of the fastest jobs we do. A typical 30 to 45 cm residential stump takes 30 to 60 minutes. A row of five old cedar stumps takes a morning. The only step that takes longer is the utility locate, which we request the day you book so it is done by grind day.
How Deep We Grind
For lawn, we grind 15 to 30 cm below the surface. That leaves room for topsoil and grass roots. If you plan a garden bed, tell us and we go deeper in that spot. Our guide on whether a stump grows back explains why some species need deeper grinding than others.
The roots below grinding depth stay in the ground and rot away over several years. For a lawn, that is fine. If you plan a patio, a shed pad or a new tree in the same spot, full stump removal is the better choice.
Locates Before We Grind
Grinding goes below the soil, so we request free locates through Ontario One Call before we start. Locators mark gas, hydro, cable and water lines. Private lines you installed yourself, such as irrigation pipe, landscape lighting wire or an invisible dog fence, don’t get marked, so point those out when we quote.
Getting Into Backyards
Many Vaughan backyards sit behind a single side gate. Our compact grinder fits through most standard gates and runs on tracks, so it doesn’t rut the lawn the way a wheeled machine can. Tell us the gate width when you call. A photo of the stump and the path to it helps us plan, and on a tight lot we lay boards over soft ground.
Grinding Several Stumps at Once
If you have more than one stump, do them on the same visit. Setting up the grinder and the locates takes the same effort for one stump or five, so each extra stump costs less. A row of old ash stumps along a fence in Concord or Nashville, or a line of cedar stumps from an old hedge, are good examples. Point out every stump on the quote visit, including the small ones hiding in garden beds.
Grinding on the Removal Visit
If we are taking a tree down, grinding the stump the same day is the fastest option. We price the removal and the stump together, request the locates when you book, and the yard is finished in one visit with no second trip.
What Changes the Price
- Stump width. Measured across the top at the widest point. This drives most of the price.
- How many stumps. More stumps on one visit lowers the cost of each.
- Surface roots. Big roots spreading across the lawn add grinding time.
- Species. Hard, dense oak grinds slower than cedar or spruce.
- Access. Stairs, slopes and tight gates take longer.
- Chips. Leaving them in the hole costs less than hauling them away and backfilling.
Seeding or Sodding After the Grind
Wood chips make a poor bed for grass. As they rot, they pull nitrogen from the soil, and a patch over a stump often stays yellow or sinks. For a lawn that blends in, have us haul the chips and backfill with soil. Let the soil settle for a week or two, top it up and then seed or lay sod.
If you would rather keep the chips, they work as mulch in garden beds or around other trees. Spread them thin, never piled against a trunk. Expect the spot to settle a little over the next year as the roots underneath break down. A bag of topsoil in spring usually levels it.
Old Hedge Rows and Cedar Stumps
Old cedar hedges leave a line of stumps along the fence when they come out. Grinding the whole row in one pass clears the strip for a new hedge, a fence or a garden bed. Cedar stumps sit close together, so we grind the row as one strip instead of stump by stump.
Ash Stumps From Emerald Ash Borer
Many Vaughan streets in Maple, Vellore Village and Patterson lost their ash trees to emerald ash borer, and plenty of those were cut and left as stumps. Ash stumps rarely sucker, and the dead wood grinds easily, so they are some of the quickest stumps we do. Five or six along a fence line is often a morning’s work.
Stumps Near Fences, Walls and Foundations
A grinder can work close to a fence post or a foundation, but not right against it. We grind to within a few centimetres of the structure and finish the last bit by hand. Where roots run under a fence or a wall, we grind them at the edge and leave the part underneath, which rots without disturbing the structure. If a stump sits tight against a house, tell us when you call so we can plan the angle.
Stumps the Grinder Handles Best
Grinding suits almost every stump on a Vaughan lot: maples, spruce, cedar, honey locust, ash and fruit trees. It is the right choice when you want lawn, a garden bed or mulch over the spot and nothing heavy built on it. The exceptions are stumps that sucker hard from the roots, like Manitoba maple, poplar and willow, and spots where you plan a patio, a pad or a new tree. Those are better candidates for full removal, and we say so when we quote.
Renting a Grinder Versus Booking Us
Rental stump grinders are available, and some people try them. They are heavy to load, slow on anything wider than about 30 cm, and the cutting wheel throws chips and stones hard. Rental cost plus a trailer and a lost Saturday often comes close to what we charge, and we finish in under an hour. If you do rent one, request locates through Ontario One Call first. It applies to you too.
What the Yard Looks Like After a Grind
You will see a shallow patch of soil and chips where the stump was, level with the lawn or slightly mounded. Surface roots we ground show as strips of chips in the grass. We rake everything tidy, and the driveway and walk get swept. If you chose soil backfill, the patch is ready to seed once it settles.
Permits
You don’t need a City permit to grind a stump. If the tree is still standing and its trunk is 20 cm or wider at 1.37 m, removing it needs a permit first under Vaughan’s Tree Protection By-law 177-2025. Stumps from boulevard trees belong to the City.
Commercial Grinding
We grind stumps for property managers, builders and plaza owners too. A strip of dead ash stumps beside a parking lot is a half-day job, and we can work early so the lot stays open.

Stump Grinding Questions
How deep do you grind a stump?
Usually 15 to 30 cm below the surface, enough for soil and grass. We go deeper for a garden bed if you ask.
Will the grinder fit through my backyard gate?
Most likely. Our compact grinder fits through most standard side gates. Tell us the gate width when you call.
How long does stump grinding take?
Thirty to sixty minutes for most single residential stumps. Very wide stumps and big surface roots take longer.
What happens to the wood chips?
You choose. We can rake them into the hole, or haul them away and backfill with soil so the lawn blends in sooner.
Can a ground stump grow back?
Most species won’t once the stump is ground below the soil. A few, such as Manitoba maple, poplar and willow, can sucker from the roots, and those may need full removal.
Do you need locates to grind a stump?
Yes. Grinding goes below the soil, so we request free Ontario One Call locates before we start.
