When Is the Best Time to Trim Trees in Vaughan?
Most trees take pruning best while they are dormant. Oaks, maples and flowering trees each have their own rules.
For most trees in Vaughan, the best time to trim is late fall through early spring, while the tree is dormant and the leaves are off. Cuts heal faster when growth starts in spring, insects and disease are less active, and we can see the branch structure. The big exception is oak: don’t prune oaks from April through July.
Why Dormant Season Works
Between November and March, most trees have stopped growing and pulled their energy into the roots. A cut made then sits closed to most insects and fungi until spring, when the tree starts to seal it over. With no leaves in the way, we can spot crossing branches, weak joints and dead wood, and shape the tree without guessing.
Frozen ground helps too. Equipment and foot traffic do less damage to lawns and garden beds in winter than in a wet April.
Oaks and Oak Wilt
Oak wilt is a fungal disease that kills oaks, and it was confirmed in Ontario in 2023. Small beetles carry it to fresh wounds in spring and early summer. To keep your oaks safe, avoid any pruning on them from April through July. If a storm breaks an oak limb in that window, call us. Clean up the break, but leave planned pruning for late fall or winter.
Oaks grow along the Humber valleys in Kleinburg and Woodbridge and on older lots in Thornhill, so this matters more here than in many newer subdivisions.
Species With Their Own Timing
Late winter suits most trees on a Vaughan lot, but a few common species need a different window.
Maples and Birches
These bleed sap if you cut them in late winter. The dripping doesn’t hurt the tree. If it bothers you, trim them in early summer once the leaves are fully out.
Spring-Flowering Trees
Crabapples, magnolias, lilacs and redbuds set next year’s flower buds in summer. Trim them right after they finish blooming, or you’ll cut off next spring’s flowers.
Evergreens
Spruce and pine take light shaping in late spring, after the new growth comes out. Cedars handle a trim through the summer.
Work That Can’t Wait
Some trimming has no season. Book it as soon as you see it:
- A dead or broken branch over the house, driveway or play area.
- Limbs rubbing the roof or the eavestrough.
- Branches that block a stop sign or a sightline at your driveway.
- A split limb after a storm.
Dead wood can come out any time of year without harming the tree. If you’re unsure whether a branch is dead, see how to tell if a tree is dead.
How Often to Trim
Young trees benefit from a light structural trim every two or three years while they are setting their shape. Most mature shade trees on a Vaughan lot need attention every three to five years: deadwood out, clearance over the roof and driveway checked, and any crossing limbs dealt with. Fast growers such as silver maple and willow may need it sooner. Fruit and flowering trees do best with a small trim every year after they bloom.
A tree that hasn’t been touched in ten years usually can’t be brought back in one visit. Taking too much at once stresses it, so we spread heavy work over two dormant seasons.
Seasons to Avoid for Heavy Pruning
Skip heavy pruning in spring while leaves are opening, because the tree is using stored energy and a big cut costs it more. Late summer into early fall is also a poor time, since cuts can push new growth that won’t harden before frost. Light work in those windows is fine.
When you book tree trimming, we’ll look at the species and tell you if it’s better to wait a few weeks. If waiting is the better choice, we’ll say so.

Timing Questions
Can you trim trees in the summer?
Yes, for light work and for dead or broken branches. We avoid heavy pruning in summer, and we don't prune oaks from April through July.
Is it bad that my maple drips sap after trimming?
Maples bleed sap when cut in late winter and early spring. It looks alarming but it doesn't harm the tree.
Should I trim before winter storms?
Taking out dead and weak limbs in the fall is a good idea, since ice and snow load is what brings most of them down.
